PROJECT: surface treatment of metal and plastic parts
P&F120 – Power & Free floor conveyor in operation @ TRIUMPH Motorcycles
In the production of world-class motorcycles, the quality of the finish on both metal and plastic components is a defining characteristic of the brand. For Triumph Motorcycles, based in Hinckley, United Kingdom, CALDAN designed and installed a bespoke P&F120 power & free floor conveyor system. This 189-meter installation provides the highly controlled environment required for the automated surface treatment of premium motorcycle parts.
The Triumph project required a system capable of managing a wide variety of parts, from small plastic trims to larger metal engine and frame components. To maintain the high aesthetic standards of the Triumph brand, the system had to address several key requirements:
1. Multi-material processing: The conveyor needed to transport both plastic and metal parts seamlessly through the same treatment line.
2. Sophisticated rotation logic: Accurate coating required a mix of manual rotation in spray booths and passive rotation during flash-off and cooling stages.
3. Continuous production flow: The manufacturing line required a steady operational capacity of 24 wagons per hour to meet global demand for Triumph motorcycles.
4. Compact floor-level integration: A floor-mounted system was necessary to provide easy access for manual loading while optimizing the available workspace in the Hinckley facility.
The P&F120 floor conveyor UK was selected for its reliability and precision in managing high-quality finishing processes. Key technical features of this UK installation include:
– Specialized rotation control: The system incorporates manual rotation with mechanical locking for precision in spray booths, along with 90-degree mechanical locking for passive rotation in flash-off and cooling areas.
– Consistent operational speed: Operating at a steady 0.8 meters per minute, the system ensures a 150-second cycle time per wagon, providing the perfect balance between throughput and coating quality.
– Robust 4-wheeled wagon design: Engineered for parts weighing up to 30 kg, the 4-wheeled wagons provide stable and smooth transportation of components through every stage of the 189-meter track.
– Cardan chain durability: The system is powered by our high-performance cardan chain, ensuring reliable, continuous operation in both manual and automated zones.
The Caldan UK conveyor installation at Triumph Motorcycles has optimized the finishing capacity of their main UK production site. By utilizing the P&F120 technology, Triumph has secured a robust and flexible solution that supports the legendary quality and finish of their motorcycles, all while maintaining efficient production rates in the United Kingdom.
